About FOSII (Forum for Open Source Initiative in India)

When like-minded people come together in a non-commercial attempt to promote open source initiatives in India, they can work magic. It is with this view that Linux For You team recently initiated the formation of the 'Forum for Open Source Initiatives in India' or FOSII (pronounced foss-eye).

FOSII comprises individuals from various walks of the Linux/OSS ecosystem including the industry, academia, media, government, users and the developer community. What binds them together is their deep interest in driving innovation in and adoption of open source principles, practices and software in India.

How does it work?

The forum works quite like a "mailing list", where its members discuss issues/challenges and decide on future plans of action/solutions, in line with the goals of the forum. One of the key reasons for the formation of FOSII is to ensure that such attempts happen on a continuous basis and not merely during conferences and such events.
FOSII brings together varied personalities with a common goal, but also facilitates members to pursue different agendas under the OSS umbrella in line with their specialisation, through the creation of sub-groups. These sub-groups then take up different causes amongst themselves and drive initiatives.
How would FOSII advance the cause of OSS in India?
  • By acting as a common platform for members to pool in intellectual and physical resources, effort and time, to pursue a common agenda.
  • By providing a meeting ground where like-minded individuals and organisations can interact.
  • By encouraging open-minded discussion, not only for finding solutions to problems, but also for conflicting stances to be debated and resolved.
The first meeting of the FOSII panel happened at LinuxAsia 2007, in New Delhi, India. The agenda/plans charted out by the group, and other key points discussed, will be updated on the website soon.
